What is “RFID Technology”
FDA approved human RFID implant.
Over the last few years, controversy has stormed over this relatively new technology. About 27 years ago, I created a list of benefits for the implementation of such a device. The list was long, even when I stopped, I realized the possibilities were nearly limitless.
Here is an overview of the technology…
RFID, Radio Frequency Identification Device
Applied Digital Solutions is the parent company of two companies.
Digital Angel Corpration : Which produces animal, aviation, and asset tracking solutions.
VeriChip Corporation : Specializes in implantable RFID chips, called VeriChip or VeriMed. The Medical side, VeriMed is coming out under the new XMark corporate identity for it’s healthcare line of products. The line includes the Hugs and Halo Infant Protection, RoamAlert for wandering protection, MyCall for emergency response and Assetrac for healthcare.
VeriChip is the first Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved human-implantable RFID microchip. VeriChip received United States FDA approval in 2004. About twice the length of a grain of rice, the device is typically implanted above the triceps area of an individual’s right arm. Once scanned at the proper frequency, the VeriChip responds with a unique 16-digit number which can correlate the user to information stored on a database for identity verification, medical records access and other uses. The insertion procedure is performed under local anesthetic in a physician’s office and once inserted, is invisible to the naked eye.
